If you or someone you care about wants to stay in their current home for as long as possible, preventing slips, trip and fall risks around the home is one of the most important things you can do. In Canada, almost one third of seniors fall each year. Half of those falls that result in hospitalization happen at home. Unfortunately, many of these falls result in older adults having to go into long-term care after their hospital stay.
Wheelchairs, Seating, Mobility Niagara (WSM Niagara) is here to help prevent that from happening with our free, three-step home assessment. Here’s how it works:
Free Home Assessment Step #1: Schedule A Free Assessment by calling 289.786.0088
A WSM Niagara Home Safety and Mobility Expert will come to your house at the date and time that works best for you. After a conversation to better understand your goals and safety concerns, he will conduct a thorough assessment of the interior and exterior of your home. As part of this assessment, he will identify risks that could lead to slips, trips and injuries.
Free Home Assessment Step #2: Understand Your Options
As part of the assessment, your WSM Niagara Home Safety and Mobility Expert will provide you with a detailed list and pricing estimate of recommended products that will allow you to live more safely in the home you love. He’ll also leave you with helpful product brochures to allow you to learn more about the products he feels will be most helpful to you.
Free Home Assessment Step #3: Choose What’s Right For You
WSM Niagara’s no-pressure approach means you have complete control to choose the safety products that we recommend for your home that best fit your needs, timeline and budget. If you choose to move forward with any of our product recommendations, we’ll schedule the installation based on your schedule.
What Types of Home Safety Products Might My Home Need?
While our product recommendations will be tailored to your unique needs and the specific design of your home, the products we most frequently recommend and install include:
Support Bars, Poles and Railings
Today’s wide range of grab bars, support poles and railings offer additional support that is particularly important in high-risk areas like the bathroom.
Threshold ramps are inserted over the foot of doorways or floor transitions to allow wheeled devices like walkers, wheelchairs or scooters to safely and easily roll over the threshold. They are available in a variety of sizes, materials and designs.
Outdoor ramps allow wheelchairs, scooters and walkers to move up and down exterior stairways safely and easily.
Stair glides, also referred to as chair lifts and stair lifts, are an affordable solution that allow those experiencing difficulty with stairs to access different levels in their house safely. They are fast and easy to install and are powered by a simple electrical plug. Typically, stair glides bolt into the existing staircase. They can be customized to address curved stairways, split levels and landings.
In some cases, stair ramps aren’t the best solution to address exterior stairways. In many of these cases, a porch lift is a great alternative. Like a very simplified elevator, the lift provides a platform that can accommodate mobility devices like wheelchairs, scooters or walkers. With the press of a button, the platform rises and lowers between the ground and the porch floor.
When someone needs assistance being transferred from one device to another, such as from a bed to a wheelchair, a ceiling lift is an excellent option to protect the safety of the individual and their caregiver.
